DEXA - Dual Site (Both Femur Spine) Bone Densitometry

DEXA - also called “dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry,” is a medical imaging test that uses low levels of X-rays to measure how dense your bones are.

DEXA scan uses X-rays to determine the distribution of fat, muscle, water and bone in the body. It works by passing two low-dose x-ray beams at different energy levels through the body. The machine comes with special software that measures bone density.

This bone density testing is used by doctors to find out any decrease in bone density before you break a bone. It is also used to confirm a diagnosis of osteoporosis.

These scans are safe. The amount of radiation used in these scans is very low.

During the test, you should wear comfortable clothing which is without metal buttons and zippers.

You will be asked to lie on your back on a padded table. A technician may place a wedge under your knees to position your hip or flatten your spine. You have to stay very still while the imaging arm moves slowly across your body. The entire process is completed within a few minutes.
