Frequently Asked Questions

A positron emission tomography (PET) is a powerful imaging technique that provides details about how tissues and organs are functioning. The scan produces 3-dimensional images of the inside of the body. It helps doctors diagnose various illnesses, injuries, and disorders.

PET scans help check any abnormal cell activity rather than internal structures. It can spot symptoms of certain diseases that other imaging techniques cannot make out. It is often ordered when your doctor either suspects cancer or that a cancer may have spread. It is also used to determine the damage following a heart attack or stroke, and to monitor your response to neurological, cardiovascular or cancer treatments.

During a PET-CT scan, a radioactive form of glucose (sugar), also called a radiotracer, is injected into the vein of your arm. The radiotracer gets absorbed by the body and then a PET scan and CT scan is performed to get a complete picture of what is going on.

The patient can leave the PET centre immediately unless he is feeling tired after fasting so long. It is important to drink loads of water throughout the day to flush out the radioactive chemical from within the body.

A PET scan is a painless imaging test and has few risks. Since a PET scan uses a radiotracer, there is a risk of radiation exposure. Women should tell the radiologist if they are breastfeeding or pregnant.

Since PET-CT Scan is a detailed investigation, our team of doctors will be reviewing and reporting your study within 24-48 working hours.
