An orthopantomogram (OPG) is a type of dental x-ray in which a panoramic view x-ray of the lower face is seen. It displays all the teeth of the upper and lower jaw on a single film. It reveals the number, position, and growth of all the teeth, including those that have not yet surfaced or broken.
OPG is different from the small close up x-rays in which an image is taken of each teeth. An OPG display troubles with the jawbone and the temporomandibular joint or TMJ (the joint that connects the jawbone with head). An OPG may also be recommended for the planning of orthodontic treatment for assessment of wisdom teeth or for a general overview of the teeth and the bone which supports the teeth.
