The test is performed to help detect cholecystitis – an inflammation of the gallbladder. Cholecystitis occurs when a gallstone (hardened deposits of the digestive fluids) blocks bile (a fat-digesting fluid made by the liver) from exiting the organ. Gallstones can range in size from a tiny grain of sand to a golf ball.
